SRI Kenya – Key Projects (Drupal ready, fullwidth)
01
National Physical Science Research Laboratories (NPSRL)
Konza Technopolis
Kenya Vision 2030 flagship initiative – The National Physical Sciences Research Laboratory (NPSRL) is designed as a National Centre of Excellence in Physical Sciences, supporting both fundamental and applied research. Located at Konza Technopolis, this one-stop research hub provides shared access to advanced scientific equipment, specialized laboratories, and technical expertise for researchers from universities, research institutions, industry, and government agencies. By consolidating high-end research infrastructure, the NPSRL strengthens Kenya's research capacity, fosters innovation, and accelerates the translation of scientific discoveries into practical applications for national development.
Eleven key laboratories:
Mineralogy and Nanotechnology
Theoretical and Computational Sciences
Materials Science and Engineering
Forensic Science
Nuclear and Allied Sciences
Chemistry and Chemical Technology
Metrology and Allied Sciences
Biotechnology (industrial, marine, GMOs, pharmaceuticals)
Environmental Sciences
Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy
Space Science
Together, these laboratories provide an integrated platform for multidisciplinary research, technology development, and innovation in the physical sciences, supporting Kenya's transition toward a knowledge-based and industrialized economy.
02
National Science, Technology and Innovation Observatory (NASTIO)
Nacosti
Strengthening Kenya's SRI ecosystem – To strengthen Kenya's Science, Research and Innovation (SRI) ecosystem, the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation (SDSRI) is implementing the NASTIO. NASTIO will serve as the central platform for collecting, aggregating, and analyzing science, technology and innovation (STI) data, generating internationally recognized indicators, and producing reports on STI development in Kenya. By harmonizing fragmented data sources and benchmarking Kenya's innovation ecosystem against global standards, NASTIO will enhance the country's capacity for socioeconomic growth through STI.
Once established at the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) building, NASTIO will function as a national innovation hub for STI data aggregation, production of knowledge products, policy evaluation, and public–private dialogue on innovation. It will become the official source of accurate STI data for national and international stakeholders. Ultimately, NASTIO will enable Kenya to build a robust evidence base for innovation-driven development, strengthen global competitiveness, foster inclusive and sustainable transformation, and catalyze national prosperity.
03
Science Technology Park (STP)
Dedan Kimathi University of Technology
Strategic location at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology – The Science and Technology Park (STP) offers strong linkages with other institutions of higher learning, access to a skilled talent pool, availability of qualified human resources, proximity to essential social services, and connectivity to local, regional, and international markets. These factors make the location conducive for fostering research commercialization, innovation, and industry–academia collaboration.
Primary thematic areas:
Agro‑technology Design, Manufacturing & Materials (DMM) ICT (hardware & software)
The STP provides a dynamic ecosystem for business support and technology transfer by encouraging and supporting the start-up, incubation, and growth of innovation-driven, high-potential, knowledge-based enterprises. It creates an environment where established local and international companies collaborate closely with centres of knowledge creation, generating mutual benefits in research, product development, and commercialization.
  • Promotes integration with the surrounding community
  • Operationalizes the Quadruple Helix Model (academia, government, industry, society)
  • Strengthens collaboration for innovation, technology diffusion, and socio-economic development
  • Supports transition from labour-intensive to knowledge-based economy
