The State Department for Science, Research and Innovation (SDSRI) was established through Executive Order No. 1 of June 2025 on the Organization of Government, which assigned it specific mandates in science, research and innovation. Prior to this, the research function was domiciled within the former State Department for Higher Education and Research under the Ministry of Education. The establishment of SDSRI brought together the research function with the newly assigned mandates of science and innovation under a dedicated State Department, providing a coordinated framework for advancing Kenya's science, research and innovation agenda.
